Overview

Performance marketing is the ROAS, not the spend

The reason most performance marketing engagements fail is the same: the agency runs the campaigns, sends a monthly report with impressions and clicks, and the revenue does not move in a way the business can attribute to spend. The work is the ROAS, and the ROAS is the report card.

We do performance marketing as a revenue problem, not a spend problem. The bidding, the creative, the landing pages and the attribution are all in service of the ROAS. The weekly review is against the funnel data, with the budget shifted to the campaigns that actually move the number.

This is the wrong engagement if the goal is brand awareness without a revenue target, or if the product is not yet ready for paid spend. We will say so on the call.

  • ROAS First — The performance marketing is tied to the ROAS, with the weekly review as the report card.
  • Channel Mix Right — The spend is allocated across the channels that actually move the number.
  • Creative That Converts — Creative iterated against the data, not shipped and forgotten.
  • Attribution Built In — The attribution model is in place from day one, with the conversion API wired in.

Performance marketing is the subset of digital marketing that is tied to a measurable revenue event — a purchase, a lead, a signup. The spend is allocated against the ROAS, the campaigns are iterated weekly, and the attribution is in place from day one. Digital marketing is the broader practice that includes brand work, content and SEO.

It depends on the unit economics. For a D2C brand, 3–5x ROAS is a reasonable target. For a B2B SaaS, the target is usually a payback period, not a multiple. For a lead-gen business, the target is the cost per qualified lead. We will say so on the call, with a written recommendation for the target and the budget.

It depends on the stage, the unit economics and the channel mix. For an early-stage business, the budget is usually concentrated on the channels that have proven ROI. For a growth-stage business, the budget is split between the channels that fill the funnel and the channels that compound. We will say so on the call.

The creative is part of the engagement. We design, ship and iterate the ad creative against the data, with the winning variants scaled and the losing variants cut. The creative is iterated weekly, not monthly, because the channels reward speed.
