Desktop Application DevelopmentFor Counters, Plants and Offline Work.

DipanshuTech is a desktop application development company building Windows, macOS and Linux software for Indian businesses: billing counters, weighbridges, factory terminals and back-office tools that print to thermal printers, read barcode scanners and weighing scales, keep working offline and sync to the cloud. Signed installers and auto-updates come included. Business software starts at ₹39,999.

Overview

Why some software still belongs on the desktop

A desktop application installs on the computer itself instead of running in a browser tab. That matters more in India than web-first developers admit. A billing counter in Meerut cannot stop when the broadband drops at 7 pm. A weighbridge needs to read the scale over a serial port. A shop needs a 3-inch thermal receipt in under a second, not a print dialog.

We ship desktop apps for exactly these jobs. SchoolBill’s Windows app lets a school office add students with no internet, holds them in an encrypted queue on that PC, and uploads them when the line returns. AccVora ships a Windows installer next to its Android app. WorkLens runs an Electron agent on employee PCs that records activity and syncs when it can.

A desktop app makes the wrong choice when your users sit on phones and laptops you do not control, nobody prints anything, and the internet holds up. A web application costs less to update and needs no installer, so we would point you there instead.

  • Works Without Internet — Billing and data entry continue offline; sync catches up when the line returns.
  • Talks to Your Hardware — Printers, scanners and scales driven directly, without a browser print dialog in the way.
  • Updates Itself — Signed updates download in the background, so no engineer visits each PC.
  • Support After Release — Crash reports, an update channel and fixes in a written response window.

Legacy Desktop Rewrites

VB6, FoxPro, Delphi and MS Access applications rebuilt on a current stack with every record carried across.

Who needs a desktop application

Desktop software earns its place wherever a fixed computer does fixed, repetitive work, often attached to hardware, often with shaky internet. A supermarket in Lucknow bills 600 customers a day across four counters. A stone crusher in Rajasthan weighs every truck and prints a slip. A garment exporter in Tiruppur prints barcode labels for every carton. A school fee counter takes payments all morning and cannot wait for a page to load.

Office tools belong here too: data-entry heavy software for CA firms, a monitoring agent on employee PCs, or a kiosk at a clinic reception.

  • Retail, wholesale and pharmacy billing counters
  • Restaurants with KOT printers at the kitchen and bar
  • Weighbridges, stone crushers, rice mills and cold stores
  • Factory terminals for production entry, QC and label printing
  • School and college fee counters, clinic and lab reception desks
  • Employee monitoring agents and background sync tools

Electron, .NET, Flutter or Tauri: when we use each

Framework choice sets your installer size, memory use, hardware access and how much code you can share with web and mobile. We decide it per project, in writing, before we start.

  • Electron: our default when you already have a web app or need Windows, macOS and Linux from one codebase. Installers run around 70–90 MB and memory use is higher, which rarely matters on a current office PC
  • .NET with WPF: Windows-only software that needs deep OS access, low memory on old 4 GB counter PCs, Windows services, or heavy serial-device work
  • Flutter desktop: when the same app must also run on Android and iOS with one interface. Hardware plugins on desktop are thinner, so we budget time for native code
  • Tauri: small installers, often under 10 MB, using the system WebView and a Rust core. A good fit for light utilities; it has fewer ready-made libraries than Electron

Offline-first, and how the sync stays honest

Offline-first means every entry saves to a local database, usually SQLite, before anything touches the network. A sync service then pushes local changes up and pulls price lists, items and customers down. Conflicts follow written rules: prices and masters from the server win, while bills raised offline always stand, because a receipt already sits in a customer’s hand. Each counter gets its own invoice series so two offline counters never issue the same number.

SchoolBill’s offline queue shows the details we care about. Entries write atomically to a local file with a backup copy, each PC holds its own device key encrypted with Windows DPAPI, and every entry carries a visible state: waiting, uploading, needs a fix, or saved. Staff can see what has reached the server instead of hoping.

Printers, scanners and scales

Hardware decides whether a desktop app feels quick or clumsy at a counter. We test against the actual devices on your site, not a simulator.

  • 2- and 3-inch thermal printers over ESC/POS, with logo, QR code and Hindi text where the printer supports it
  • Barcode and QR scanners in keyboard-wedge or serial mode, including GS1 and weighing-scale barcodes
  • Weighing scales over RS-232 or USB-serial, with stable-weight detection before a reading gets accepted
  • Label printers from TSC and Zebra using TSPL or ZPL, for carton, shelf and price labels
  • Cash drawers opened through the receipt printer, plus customer pole displays
  • A4 invoices on letterhead through the normal Windows printer, with save-as-PDF

Installers, code signing, auto-update and licensing

An unsigned installer triggers a Windows SmartScreen warning that makes staff and customers nervous. We sign installers with your organisation’s certificate, which now has to live on a hardware token or cloud signing service, so the publisher name shows correctly. Installers come as NSIS executables or MSIX packages, per-user or per-machine, with a portable version where useful.

Updates download in the background from your own server and install on the next restart, with staged roll-outs so one bad build cannot stop every counter at once. If you sell the software, we add licensing: keys bound to a machine, online activation with an offline grace period, trial periods and renewal reminders.

Timeline and cost

Wrapping an existing web application as a desktop app with direct printing usually takes 2–4 weeks. A new offline billing or plant application with hardware integration usually takes 8–14 weeks. Business software on our price list starts at ₹39,999; the final quote depends on the framework, the number of hardware devices, offline sync complexity, operating systems supported, licensing, and whether a web or mobile version shares the backend.

We test on Windows 10 and Windows 11 by default. Older Windows versions need an older runtime or .NET, and we flag that during scoping rather than after delivery.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

Something not covered here? Ask us directly.

Business software on our price list starts at ₹39,999. A desktop wrapper for an existing web app sits near the lower end. A new offline billing or plant app with printers, scanners, scales, sync and licensing costs more. You get a written fixed quote after we have seen your counters and devices.

Choose Electron if you need macOS or Linux too, already have a web app, or want to share code with a web version. Choose .NET with WPF for Windows-only software on old, low-memory PCs, or with heavy serial-device and Windows service work. We recommend one in writing after discovery, with the reasons.

Yes, when we build it offline-first. Every bill and entry saves to a local database on the PC, and a sync service uploads it when the connection returns. Counters keep separate invoice series, so offline billing never creates duplicate numbers.

Almost certainly. We support ESC/POS thermal printers, keyboard-wedge and serial barcode scanners, weighing scales over RS-232 or USB-serial, and TSC or Zebra label printers. We test with the exact models on your site before release.

The app checks your update server, downloads new versions in the background and installs them on the next restart. We release in stages, a few PCs first and then the rest, so a faulty build gets caught early instead of stopping every counter.

Windows warns about installers from publishers it cannot verify. We sign every release with your organisation’s code-signing certificate, so the installer shows your company name. The certificate sits in your name, and we set up the signing step in the build pipeline.

Yes, usually in 2–4 weeks. We wrap it with Electron, add direct printing, desktop shortcuts, a server-address setting and offline screens where they matter, then ship a signed installer with auto-update. SchoolBill and AccVora both started this way.

Yes. Licence keys bind to a machine, activation happens online with an offline grace period, and you can issue trials, renewals and seat limits from an admin panel. No licensing stops a determined cracker, but it keeps honest customers honest and gives you renewal revenue.
