This GSTIN validator checks that a 15-character GST number has the right pattern, a real state code, a known PAN holder type and the correct check character. It catches typos before an invoice goes out. It checks format and checksum only and cannot tell you whether the GSTIN is active.

Checks format and checksum only — it does not confirm the GSTIN is active; use the GST portal for that. Search the GSTIN on the GST portal to see its status and legal name.
How to use
Type or paste the GSTIN. Spaces are removed and letters are changed to capitals as you type.
Once all 15 characters are in, the result shows whether the format and the check character are valid.
If it fails, read the reason. It points to the part that is wrong, such as an unknown state code or a check character that does not match.
If it passes, read the state, PAN and holder type, and make sure they match the business you are dealing with.
To confirm the GSTIN is registered and active, search it on the GST portal, which also shows the legal name.
A GSTIN has 15 characters. The first two digits are the state code, for example 07 for Delhi, 27 for Maharashtra or 09 for Uttar Pradesh. The next ten characters are the PAN of the business.
The 13th character counts how many GST registrations the same PAN holds in that state, starting at 1. The 14th character is the letter Z by default. The 15th is a check character worked out from the first 14.
The fourth character of the PAN shows the type of holder: C for a company, P for an individual, F for a firm, H for a Hindu undivided family, T for a trust, and so on. The validator shows this as the holder type.
The check character comes from a fixed calculation over the first 14 characters. Each character is turned into a number, every second one is doubled, the results are added in a set way, and the total gives one character from 0 to 9 or A to Z.
If someone mistypes one character, the calculation almost always gives a different check character, so the GSTIN fails. That makes the check good at catching typing mistakes, copied numbers with a missing digit and made-up numbers that only look right.
Passing the check does not prove the GSTIN belongs to anyone. A number can have a valid pattern and checksum and still be cancelled, suspended or never issued.
This validator works offline in your browser. It checks format and checksum only — it does not confirm the GSTIN is active, and it does not show the legal name, address or filing status. Use the GST portal for that.
Before you pay a new vendor or claim input tax credit, search the GSTIN on the GST portal and match the legal name and state with the invoice. Your CA can advise on what else to check for large purchases.
